All Strong Fitness had a few days last weekend! On Thursday, we traveled up to Ames, Iowa to celebrate the Special Olympics Iowa Summer Games, which took place over three days. The summer games are an annual celebration of inclusive sport and fitness in the state, focusing on competition in swimming, bocce ball, track and field, and many more summer games. In addition to the sporting events, there is also numerous opportunities for athletes to participate in free health screenings, as part of the “healthy athletes” programming. A few of these options include free dental screening, foot screening, and even bone health and blood pressure readings. All Strong Fitness acted as an assistant clinical health director in the health promotion area. We helped assist the clinical directors, Judy (in the picture), and Andy with setup of the health promotion tent, train volunteers on their various duties, and assist with running booths when needed. We had numerous great conversations with the athletes, and enjoyed learning about their sports and health patterns throughout the event.
After our time in Ames, we traveled down to Minneapolis, Minnesota to teach a low impact exercise class to a few retired sisters in the Carondolet Village. The Carondolet Village is an assisted living community that has numerous housing options for retired sisters who used to work full time in the ministry. With no weekend programming, we wanted to come into town to meet some more members of the community, and help get them a good workout over the weekend. The sisters showed off their skills through numerous exercises, even though some had not participated in a class in over a year. The weekend was filled of many different types of inclusive fitness. We hope to spread the word of inclusive fitness to more communities, athletes, and everyone in the upcoming summer months!
